PEI’s Coast: Current Conditions, Progress, and Next Steps

PEI’s coastline is changing due to erosion, flooding, storm surge, and sea-level rise. The State of the Coast Report and the Interim Coastal Policy Recommendations Report help guide how the province is responding through coastal hazard signage, shoreline management planning, and other coastal resilience actions.

The Government of Prince Edward Island has installed coastal erosion and coastal flooding caution signs in various locations across PEI.

Work is also underway on shoreline management plans (SMPs), which will help communities understand coastal risks, plan for future changes. Visit Shoreline Management Plans to learn more.

The State of the Coast Report provides an overview of PEI’s coastline, including natural coastal systems, coastal development, infrastructure, erosion, flooding, and shoreline change, helping government, communities, and property owners better understand coastal risks and plan for long-term coastal resilience.

Make coastal risk info easier to use

Help residents, property owners, communities, and decisions-makers understand coastal hazards before making important decisions.

Reduce future risk in high-hazard areas

Avoid adding new development, infrastructure, or public investment where coastal risks are expected to increase.

Protect natural coastal systems

Support beaches, dunes, wetlands, salt marshes, and other natural features that protect our shores.

Plan at a shoreline scale

Use Shoreline Management Plans to guide decisions for larger coastal areas, rather than making decisions property by property.

Focus on long-term solutions

Prioritize prevention, relocation, restoration, and risk reductions over repeated short-term actions.
